An Update on the 'Justice League' Movie
Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Fandom, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Well, we might be getting a big screen version of DC Comic's Justice League sooner than we thought. Robert Sanchez at IESB reports that sources at Warner Bros. confirm that "execs behind the Justice League of America want it to be in production as early as February/March 2008 to be ready for a summer of 2009 release." Last June, Erik reported that a completed script for the film had been turned in by Kiernan and Michele Mulroney. IESB's sources now say Warner was so happy with the result, the studio decided to set an early start date for the film. We've already heard talk that George Miller (Mad Max) will be signed to direct, but, the big question still remains: With new installments of Batman and Superman on the way, will WB be able to create a crossover with Christian Bale and Brandon Routh reprising their respective roles? Routh seemed more enthusiastic about the idea than Bale, but if WB is in a rush to get Justice League off the ground, the studio will have to start making some decisions. Casting Routh or Bale could cause serious delays with either a potential third Batman film or the next Superman film, The Man of Steel -- which are two pretty big franchises for WB to gamble with. On the other hand, Justice League could launch a franchise all its own. Plus, the film offers the chance for tie-ins with upcoming big screen versions of Wonder Woman and The Flash. So far nothing is official, so stay tuned for JLA updates as they come our way.

It was only a matter of time. I knew it would come. There's just too much money in it. There are just too many people sitting in their executive chairs thinking, "Superman fans x Batman fans x all the other freaks = tons of money".
At least this is the beginning of the end of superhero comic adaptations. God bless!

Why do people get so hung up about Bale and Routh? We have had several Batmans, several Supermans - just cause they are in the current stand alone franchise doesn't mean we can't have others in a JLA movie. If they look and act the parts, you won't even be thinking of the solo efforts. In fact, having Bale/Routh would eliminate bringing any baggage from the other flicks and let it stand on its own merits.
Ryan Reynolds as the Flash is a good choice.
We all know the list of actresses who want to be Wonder Woman - pick one.Just make sure it's WOMAN not a girl.
Green Lantern should be someone like Jamie Foxx unless they go Jordan instead of Stewart but I doubt it.
Martian Manhunter - guy who played Xerxes in 300 or maybe Vin Diesel.
Aquaman - jeez, the lamest superhero of the bunch, unless they go with the retcon version.

I hope they cast Sarah Michelle Gellar as Wonder Woman. Nothing says amazon like a 5'3" blonde valley girl.

OK, now that they are doing an ensemble piece, they can afford to take a chance on a lesser known name like Morena Baccarin (Firefly) or Elisha Dushku (sp?) for Wonder Woman. They would be perfect.
Which would make a better movie, a Justice League Movie or an Avengers movie (either Ultimate version or regular)?

Routh, Bale, Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler?! That's $50M right there. Plus all the effects work for all those super powers?
I don't see how they'll afford to cast this movie with anything but Sci-Fi Channel Z-list Canadians.

Frankly if the Justice League Movie project does get off the ground, an entirely new group of unknowns should be used. Let Routh and Bale continue on the solo movies. If the script is good and the director knows what he is doing, the movie will do well without the complication of having to deal with Routh, Bale and their high salaries. By the way, Wonder Woman should be a real woman. Not some teenage 98 pound, 5'2" skinny, wimpy, anorexic blond. Anyone remember Xena(Lucy Lawless) or Lynda Carter? Both mature 6' tall brunettes. That is what Wonder Woman should look like.

In order for this to be the hit they want it to be and to keep continuity, they'll need Bale & Routh, but if they keep there roles small and concentrate on the rest (ZZzzzzzz) it could work, without them this movie sounds like a bore fest ala Fantastic four with a bunch of nobodies... but then again look how they kick started the batman franchise so anything is possible

Hell, I think they should ditch the live-action idea, give Paul Dini, Alan Bennett and Bruce Timm $50 million and let them go off and craft a JLA animated movie.

They should get Bale and Tom Welling from Smallville. Since they just rebooted Batman with "Batman Begins", Bale is the current Batman and a young Batman. Welling is the young, not quite costumed and flying, Superman. Forget Routh. They could use the Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Flash characters already cast in Smallville. They basically formed the JLA last season.

There is no way Bale will do this. It's commercial purgatory. I don't believe he wants to be part of the whole Burger King toy thing. Look at his work. It's mostly very edgy independent film with hard issues and deep passion. Batman Begins wasn't just another franchise movie. He tried to make it darker, more realistic. I don't know how he fared, I mean it was cool, but more like a successful version of The Shadow, you know? JLA will be a huge popcorn, Fantastic Four type movie. All bright with the latest CG FX, something Batman isn't about right now. I think he'll pass, and wisely so. Too many superheroes in one movie is not necessarily a good thing.

It makes me sick that after spending so much time re-establishing their two superstar franchises - Superman and Batman - by putting them with name directors and easing up on the corn, WB/DC would throw it all away for a one-time commercial bonanza. This is so unfathomably stupid.
Personally, I would rather see them do a movie with the rest of the JLA (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, et al); that way if the movie's successful they can spin them off into solo efforts.

The best advice is to leave BOTH Superman AND Batman OUT of the movie. The JLA movie should be much like the JLA comic book... it should start out WITHOUT them.
By the way... Anyone who suggests that the live-action JLA movie should star ANYONE who has ever been on UPN or the WB should be SHOT!!!

Why does Bale even need to be in this? They should cast an older actor to play an older Batman/Bruce Wayne. In a JL movie, they could imply the events take place after the Bale/Nolan Batman movies continuity. I'd rather that Bale's Batman remain the loner bad-ass. Personally I've never been a fan of JL Batman.

It's a shame Bale won't be doing this (or will he?) as it COULD be really cool. There's far too much BS that complicates the whole thing - but if there's no Batman, then that's fine. I think that's something that could be dealt with quite easily in the story.
I've seen Aquaman referred to here as "lame", etc. But I think if that's the perception then it's only because the character hasn't been handled right most of the time. If you compare, say - the Submariner to Aquaman, there's no contest, but i think Aqu's could be a much cooler character.
So, lineup for the League if Batman is absent?
Supes, Wonder Woman, Flash, GL, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Aquaman - and maybe Martian Manhunter or Plastic Man (for comedy relief - I wanna see Plas in a movie damn it!)

Sandra, your comment is somewhat off. Lucy Lawless is nearly 6ft tall, yes (5'11) but Lynda Carter was certainly not anywhere near Amazon status. She was no taller than 5'7, and unlike Lawless, she wasn't very voluptuous or curvy; her figure was very too slim to be a believable strong amazonian, and her breasts were only seemingly large asset about her physicality.
Also, Lawless is a natural blonde. She only dyed her hair for Xena.

Who is studio trying to put in the seats, Bale/Routh fans or JLA/DC/comic fans?
Surely studios have learned by now, with this type of franchise, casting is secondary to remaining true to legend with great stories while adding new details unique to the movie.
